Projects

Unisinos internationalization project foresees that in the next four years the institution will become a national reference in the study of hospitals, intelligent factories, innovation ecosystems and impacts of digital transformation on social processes, as long as it does not neglect its vocation related to humanities and technology. This means that the Capes Print Notice presents an opportunity for Unisinos to strengthen its physical presence internationally in an interdisciplinary way by expanding the contact networks in partner universities on the strategic themes, also placing Unisinos among the global clusters of research and innovation so that it can consolidate its vision of becoming a world-class university.

The project also aims to provide society with qualified study results and technologies that are closely related to the interests of international policies, especially connecting the PRINT Unisinos actions with the UN sustainable development actions. Nationally, it intends to subsidize the decisions of public policies and governmental actions, such as industrial development policies, the national policy on Health Technology Management, the Brazilian Strategy for Digital -E-Digital Transformation, the Work Group for a National Strategy for Industry 4.0, among other strategic issues relating to the Ministries of Health, Education, Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication.

The Unisinos internationalization project presents four (4) research projects in international cooperation:

Development of Innovation Ecosystems

Theme: Innovation Ecosystems

Graduate Programs: Design and Business Administration

Coordinators: Dr. Daniel Puffal, Unisinos and Dr. Olivier Coussi, Université de Poitiers

Innovation Ecosystems theme is approached by means of a systemic perspective, where innovation is no feature of the social and economic system's elements themselves, but rather of the processes that emerge out of the elements' practical interrelation, considering technological and social aspects. Organizations might be called innovative when they manage to be major players of this procedural plot that is called "innovation ecosystem", regarding sustainability. In the scope of internationalization, today supported by information and communication technologies, such ecosystems surpass geographical limits, being able to unfold by global connections. Therefore, contemporary organizational analysis has come to stress cross-organizational connections. The environment is thus regarded as a factor whose influences on organizational structures establish some of the organizations' features. In this setting, arise studies that analyze the relations between institutions and efficiency; one of its components is directed to the understanding of environments of innovation ecosystems.

The current understanding of innovation ecosystems is marked by a focus on institutions, as companies, universities, investors, governments and their interactions. Although there is a vast literature on the dynamics of innovation in ecosystems, recent studies do not seem to identify practices, processes, resources and actions that become pivotal in this scenario. Despite this wide development of studies that encompass innovation ecosystems, some knowledge gaps have being identified and to these ones we aim to offer some contributions: a) identification of practices, processes, tools, and resources more efficient in the promotion of such environments; b) assessing the importance of the university in the transformation of innovation ecosystems; c) understand how the university's action can be influenced by ecosystem's other actors, particularly the government with its public policies and regulations; d) understand efforts to increase competitiveness of knowledge-intensive businesses in these scenarios; e) recognize cross-organizational projects for social innovation in ecosystems; f) understand innovation from a sustainable logic, where accountable and social innovation shares protagonism with technological innovation aiming at social transformation; g) study new technologies, such as blockchain, and how they affect social relations and companies' strategy on innovation ecosystems, among other issues.

Hospital of the Future - The Use of the Internet of Things and Machine Learning for the benefit of people's health

Theme: IoT and Health

Graduate Programs: Business Administration and Applied Computing

Coordinators: Dr. Cristiano Costa, Unisinos and Dr. Bjoern Eskofier, FAU Erlangen-Nurenberg

Technologies of information and communication have the potential to revolutionize the health sector, particularly due to distributed systems and artificial intelligence breakthroughs. The combination of these areas may allow a more efficient collection of vital signs and other information related to people's health through the Internet of Things (IoT). This information may be used to anticipate patient's risks through the use of machine learning techniques. This theme is already explored in projects and publications of the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS) in partnership with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), Germany.

Digital Transformation and Humanities: education and communication in movement

Theme: Digital Transformation and Humanities

Graduate Programs: Education and Communication

Coordinators: Dr. Maura Corcini Lopes, Unisinos and Dr. José António Marques Moreira, Open University of Portugal

The beginning of the 21st century brought considerable chances that demand from universities to prepare students for a future where entrepreneurship and a sense for innovation and technology are in tune with humanities and the necessary sustainable social and environmental developments. The knowledge and the development of competences for a professional acting in the 21st century must be interrelated in an international formative research environment, powered by digital, physical, and biological technologies. That is why this research project will be dedicated to the following research themes: Which are the digital transformation impacts on education and communication? How is technology able to support necessary changes in humanities, particularly in education and communication? Considering the already felt and revealed impacts of Industry 4.0, the research project "Education, Communication and Technologies" is oriented to the development of smart cities and neural networks, to the monitoring of social and techno cultural empowerment, of teaching platforms on hybrid and ubiquitous model, as well as activated by cooperation and inventiveness methodologies.

Using Internet of Things and Machine Learning in Modeling a Smart Factory in the Context of Industry 4.0

Theme: Industry 4.0

Graduate Programs: Applied Computing and Business Administration

Coordinators: Dr. Rodrigo Righi, Unisinos and Dr. Dhananjay Singh, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies

The present theme of internationalization will explore the Internet of Things in the scope of a smart factory (industry), managing multiple devices equipped with radio frequency chips, in order to: (i) increase and diminish objects interactions with servers in an adaptive way; (ii) resources on server will work in adaptive ways to be activated and deactivated with flexibility of resources, i.e., according to demands from IoT sensors and applications. The goal is to unite the Internet of Things and green computing, in order to offer a good quality service for applications and to reduce its energy consumption. In addition, the project includes high performance processing and artificial intelligence areas. The first one is particularly relevant to implement efficient load balancing and scaling techniques. Both are relevant when there is a heterogeneous system both in the infrastructure part as well as in the workload part. Artificial intelligence, by its turn, is relevant to streamline factory processes, for reducing costs, risks and to maximize client satisfaction regarding product's quality and delivery times.
