Overview

With a solid academic background and a strong focus on application, the Master's in Civil Engineering at Unisinos is a great upgrade for professionals looking to stand out in the market, work in research and development or start a career in higher education. The course offers several options of scholarships and funding and can be taken on a full or part-time basis, allowing professional and academic activities to be reconciled during the Master's.

The Graduate Program in Civil Engineering was a pioneer in Brazil focusing on the interface between Civil and Environmental Engineering – today a strong trend in the area at the international level – having been the first Graduate Program in the country to have a major in waste management, focusing both on the optimization of processes to minimize waste and on the characterization, valorization and use of these materials instead of natural resources. The reduction in the vast environmental impact caused by our sector and the various related opportunities for improvement are now widely recognized as fundamental for sustainable development. Currently, the Program has four consolidated research groups, working on several projects related to civil construction and the environment, established in two main lines of research.

Emphasis: Waste Management

The Program’s emphasis is influenced by strong demand for the solution of problems related to prevention, generation, management e recycling of waste, with a strong applied and transdisciplinary vocation. Currently, PPGEC counts with four consolidated research groups, working on several research projects focused on civil construction, sanitation and the environment, divided into two lines of research.

Lines of action

It searches for process optimization to minimize solid waste generation through cleaner production studies, streamlining, durability, and economic viability. Objects of study include civil construction job sites waste (originated in the planning, design, execution, use and final disposal stages), as well as household waste and waste originated in other industries, which have reuse or recycling potential.

It develops projects focused on the study and development of new materials, through reuse or recycling alternatives for solid waste coming from several industries. It also investigates final disposal processes of different types of municipal solid waste.

Master's Degree Curriculum

The Master's Degree in Civil Engineering requires a minimum of 30 academic credits. The program has 12 required credits, including three courses (equivalent to 9 credits) and a Research Seminar (3 credits), and at least 5 Optional courses must to be taken (15 credits), totalling 24 credits. It is expected that the student fill these activities in two academic semesters (one year). After a Qualifying exam, the dissertation should be developed throughout the course period, and represents 4 credits.
