Authors guidelines

Neotropical Biology and Conservation publishes original research articles in the fields of ecology, zoology, botanic and conservation. It is laid special emphasis on papers that develop new concepts in ecology, test ecological theories, analyze the biology and behavior of terrestrial and aquatic organisms, and contribute to the biodiversity and ecosystems conservation. Papers that imply environmental policy are welcome. Genetic papers related to biodiversity conservation are also suitable for publication. In addition to original articles the Journal publishes notes, reviews and scientific comments.

Comments

The Journal welcomes commentaries on relevant topics of ecology, botanic, zoology and biodiversity conservation. The comments may or may not be related to previously published papers. Such publications must be short, focused to a specific theme, and deeply supported by a scientific literature. The authors of criticized papers are given the right of reply.

Review articles

The reviews must be related to current themes and accompanied of the author's point of view. The reviews should be clear, short, and synthetic. Authors interested in this category should previously contact the Editor.

Submissions

Submissions to Neotropical Biology and Conservation are made on-line using Open Journal System - OJS. To submit to the journal the author must go to http://www.unisinos.br/publicacoes_cientificas/neotropical/submissao. In the first time using the system the author will be asked to register. Full instructions on making the submission are provided. Thereafter, the system will keep the author informed of the process of their submission through refereeing, any revisions that are required, and a final decision. Where a paper has joint authors, one author must accept responsibility for all correspondence.

Acceptance of papers for publication is subject to a peer review procedure and is conditional on revisions being made according to the comments from referees. The Editor is given the decision on final acceptance of the manuscripts.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

Authors can minimize the delay between final acceptance and paper printing by preparing the paper according to the following rules.

Submitted articles should be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese and typed double-spaced on A4 sized paper. There is no maximum length for papers. The manuscript must be provided in PC Word for Windows or Rich text format (rtf).

All manuscripts must contain, in the following order:

  • Title in English and in the original language;
  • Abstract in English and in the original language. The abstract must not exceed 20 lines;
  • Minimum of 3 key words in English and in the original language;
  • Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion/Conclusion and [optional] Acknowledgements.

Literature references should have the following form: "Hatschek (1877) described..." or "The statement by Hatschek (1877, p. 506)" or "As described earlier (Hatschek, 1877; Reed and Cloney, 1983a, b; Walstad et al., 1970)..."

Bibliographic references should be complete, as the examples below:

On-line references must inform: Available at http://….; accessed on yyyy/mm/dd.

Figures must be in original format considering the final resolution of 300 dpi. All lettering in the figures should be large enough to permit legibility once it is reduced. Captions should not be included in the pictures, to avoid conflicts with the final typeset captions. If a figure is essentially composed of text (e.g., tables) then it should not be drawn, but typed inside the main text. The authors must number figures and tables, to avoid ambiguities in the text. For instance, use "Figure X" instead of "the figure below".
